Box eschewed
One of a handful of shows sometimes touted as the best of '92 - chiefly due to the first set and having Steve Miller guesting (he opened on this tour). He and the Dead were long-acquainted, having crossed circles for years as Bay Area musicians, since '66. I have this show on tape but probably only listened once, tending to stick to December, and needing to give this tour its due. Though this and the previous night were skipped over by the official Giants Stadium box, putting it in perspective it's a top five show for the year.
First Set. Hellina is indeed a powerhouse start, as others have noted. Sugaree is good - not landmark or anything, but good. This is post-Hornsby, but Vince plays a Bruce-like piano riff. This is a perfected Same Thing, settling into the stadium like liquid Play-Doh, filling every row and stairwell. Vince is great, with his Voce DMI emulator. There's a 'We Want Phil' after, but it's gonna be Tennessee. Bobby thinks he's colder than a holy bastard up here, and the song takes that position in the set. Better is Masterpiece. Note the slightly different approach from Jer. Though the set is short, Bird Song is one of the longest ever, @ over 14min, and a must-hear-once, with a couple great sections.
Second Set. The We-Want-Phil is answered, though Box is an odd set-opener. But, surprise, it's a solid one. The same goes for Saint. A Sailor probably would have been better than this So Many Roads - but I guess it's a decent-enough version. During the jam for Terrapin Jer switches through several different mods. Drums has a Revenge of the Nerds jam, plus presets beats while Billy and Mickey step out front with their wearable air horns (it's otherwise OK...). Miller comes out for Miracle (it's a Millicle!). During the change-up, Jer taps him and warns him that the key is modulating to G. Then they give him a solo. It's also a 3-guitar lineup for Standing. Miller finds a couple licks after the [shaky] verses, but is unprepared when Jer pauses for the first solo slot. Who wouldn't be, standing next to Jer while he's on the moon? Sheesh. When Bobby enters the verses for Throwing Stones Jer explains the song to Steve. Bobby mostly casually talks his way through, with emphatic punctuations. It doesn't NOT work, but a simpler three-chorder is going to be something they can all bite into. The entry to Not Fade is abrupt, the results great. A unique one. The encore is one of the best examples of a Vince Knockin' (and they were good sports to have Miller come back out).
1st Set: B
2nd Set: B-
Overall = 3¾ stars
Highlights:
Hell in a Bucket - powerhouse start
The Same Thing - settles into corners
Not Fade Away - Miller adds to stadium celebration
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - presentation of a Vince Knockin'
SOURCES: Best-qual SBD is the miller_32449. Best AUD is the schoeps_eD_9972 (n. b. it has a repeated section in Same Thing). The show is usually up on YouTube - sans encore.

Great Terrapin
Great Terrapin, but then again they all were. I was at this show, hard to believe that Giants Stadium is now torn down. Remember coming into the stadium onto the field and looking at the incredible stage decor, like walking into a magic theater. Getting dosed by squirt guns filled with who knows what from people above me. Chillin at intermission out of the stadium on the grass and in a complete moment of clarity heard all of the background buzz.. thinking that this must be what a psyche hospital sounds like

Nice show
Great Birdsong, great So Many Roads. Not that it matters, but Steve Miller played w/ the boys during NFA.
Anyone remember the tsunami of wall jumpers when the lights went out? crazy....
